Evert Hekkema (1945) has been very active since the jazz revival in the beginnings of the seventies.
As a free-lancer he performed with Paul Gonsalves, Archie Shepp, Ray Brown, Horace Parlan and Junior Cook.
In 1983 he made a tour with Chet Baker in Italy. In three weeks they played at twenty different places. They also played together on the second album of the Dutch Amstel Octet.
Hekkema is very versatile: In 1979 he made an album with a famous Dutch popgroup called Doe maar and in '90 and '91 he played in Misha Mengelberg's Instant composers pool from which two CDs have been released.
In 1980 he was invited to make an album with original compositions for a Dutch label, VARA-Jazz.
On his latest CD How time flies Hekkema plays alto horn and baritone horn, instruments that are rarely used in jazz.
