In Holland good trumpet players are rare. Hekkema is one of them. He doesn't play high, loud or fast. His warm sound, linear concept and ability to tell a coherent story come alive at their best when he plays ballads.
Hekkema made a long career in the dutch jazz scene. Broadcasting company VARA gave him the opportunity to make a record under his own name. He is one of the most remarkable soloists of the Dutch Amstel Octet.
The musicians of the Amstel Octet don't get chances to play endless soloistic adventures. The solospace per composition is limited. Especially Evert Hekkema and tenor saxophonist Dick de Graaf managed to tell an interesting story in a short time.
